What Medical Expenses Can Be Deducted On Tax Returns: Tax-Deductible Medical Expenses

What medical expenses can be deducted on tax returns? Medical expenses that qualify must be primarily to treat or prevent a physical or mental defect or illness.  Expenses must be more than simply beneficial to general health (i.e., vitamins, health-supplements).  In addition, tax-deductible medical expenses are deductible in the year in which they are paid or posted to a credit card, regardless of when the associated service was provided or item received.
